History & development

Cemco was asked by Conductive Inkject Technology (CIT) in Cambridge to develop an electroless roll-to-roll coating machine for RFID antennas. RFID is an automatic identification method based on the storage and remote retrieval of data using devices known as RFID tag transponders. The technology requires a certain degree of co-operation between an RFID reader and an RFID tag. An RFID tag is an object that can be attached to or integrated into a product, animal or person for the purpose of identification and tracking using radio waves. Some tags can be read from several metres away and outside the line of sight of the reader.

Realisation

It took CEMCO less than six months to design and build the electroless roll-to-roll coating system to CIT’s exacting requirements. They provided the second stage of CIT’s world-first roll-to-roll production line, which utilises CIT’s proprietary inkjet technology to build truly additive RFID antennas from pure copper.

The METALJET 6000

The METALJET 6000 begins by inkjet printing thin, flexible substrates with a UV-curable catalytic ink in a digital process that supports rapid design change. Once cured, CEMCO’s electroless coating system produces the exceptionally uniform solid copper patterns.

Several patented CEMCO techniques are integrated into this system. Adaptations of those used in the new CEMCO Streamline range of PCB wet processing systems that have been proven to result in faster response times and improved uniformity compared to conventional equipment. These include a non-contact transport system that floats the 60 metre submerged web through the 2 metre long serpentine sump at speeds of up to 12 metres per minute. With less than 800 grams of tension and ‘liquid knives’ that enable high-speed non-contact rinsing, surface treatment and drying.

The system also includes unwind and rewind fixtures and a fully integrated PLC control system with touch screen, HMI data logging and fault analysis that automatically adjusts the mechanical and chemical process to the area and thickness requirements of the circuit pattern and manages automatic tank maintenance. Routines for the transfer and storage of chemicals.

Accessories and consumables

In addition to the systems, we also offer accessories such as filter systems and consumables.

The filter systems include centrifuges, belt filters, tower filters for 10‘, 20’ and 30’ filter cartridges or bag filters.

The following consumables are available:

  • Filter cartridges,
  • filter bags,
  • filter fleece,
  • masks for solder resist,
  • solder bars and wire,
  • flux and much more.
